在"Rush Memory and Aging Project"临床研究中，共纳入了1588名没有痴呆的参与者（平均年龄79.5岁），随访时间长达21年。在所有参与者中，FGCRS评分从4-28不等（平均评分是15.6 ± 3.7）。与FGCRS评分较低的参与者相比，高分参与者与更快的认知功能、情景记忆、工作记忆、和感知能力的下降呈相关性。在磁共振成像数据分析中，较高的FGCRS与较小的海马体积和更大体积的白质强度呈相关性。

研究结果显示，较高的心血管危险负荷可预测情景记忆、工作记忆和知觉速度的下降，并与脑内的神经变性和血管病变有关。
