这一发现公布在3月5日的《细胞》杂志上。

在一项新研究中,研究人员追踪了在子宫内或出生后不久服用含有应激激素:糖皮质激素液体溶液的小鼠的终生生理变化。糖皮质激素是减少炎症的天然激素,有助于婴儿和成年人迅速适应环境危险,例如饥荒或暴力。因此有时医师使用它们来治疗由免疫系统过度活跃引起的哮喘和自身免疫性疾病。

但是,研究人员发现,生命早期暴露于应激激素会永久改变许多免疫系统的反应,从而降低人体抵御细菌感染和对抗肿瘤的能力。

这项研究的通讯作者,霍华德休斯医学研究所免疫生物学家Ruslan Medzhitov说:“小鼠的余生进行了重新布线和编程,其方式与未接触糖皮质激素的小鼠完全不同。”

Medzhitov和第一作者,也是耶鲁大学的Jun Young Hun列出了在服用糖皮质激素的小鼠中发生的一系列生理变化,这些变化对它们的一生都有严重的影响。例如,接触这种激素的小鼠成年后比没有接触的小鼠更容易受到细菌感染和肿瘤的侵害。一种特定的生理变化是对病原体和其他对宿主的威胁作出反应的关键T细胞的活性降低。

这组作者说,这项研究有助于解释为什么个人在抵御感染的能力方面差异如此之大。它还为整个人类历史中发现的一种社会现象提供了解释:强调保护妇女在怀孕期间免受有害影响。

他说:“在所有文化中,都在努力使妇女在怀孕期间免受影响。” “早期生活压力的影响不会消失。”

这组作者说,随着人们越来越多地了解到由于早期暴露于压力而引起的分子变化,医学将更有可能找到一种将其损害最小化的方法。

Medzhitov说:“不过我们还没有找到。”
