目前对造成痴呆及老年抑郁病例未被发现的决定因素的研究还十分有限。本研究为确定老旧社区中造成未发现痴呆及抑郁病例的风险因素，采用10/66国际痴呆项目所用算法，在2007-2011年间，对来自中国6个省份的7072名年龄超过60岁的受试者进行了面谈。研究者对在面试中遇到的医生诊断的痴呆及抑郁病例进行了记录。研究采用已验证的10/66算法对痴呆（n=359）及抑郁（n=328）进行了记录。

结果发现，其中93.1%的痴呆及92.5%的抑郁病例是未经诊断的。未发现的痴呆及抑郁病例均与低教育程度、低水平职位及居住在偏僻地区显著相关。其中，造成痴呆病例未被发现的风险与“需要时可获得的帮助”有关，但与心理疾病家族史及功能损害无关。未被发现的抑郁与女性、低收入、拥有较多孩子显著相关，与心脏疾病的关联不显著。
