GSK-3β在神经发育过程中表达，并广泛参与脑内基质介导的多个典型信号通路。研究者对GSK-3β基因的变异与一系列较复杂的进行性的精神分裂症相关表型间的联系进行了评估。精神分裂症是一种具有强遗传风险的神经发育障碍。

基于计算机预测，研究者在人体中对GSK-3β的功能性变异与：

1）尸检GSK-3βmRNA在前额叶皮层的表达；

2）外周血液单核细胞（PBMCs）GSK-3β与β连环蛋白表达；

3）前额叶成像表现型；

4）精神分裂症的诊断。

等各项间的联系进行了分析。

结果符合预测，GSK-3β(rs12630592)中单核苷酸多态性的TT遗传型与尸检前额叶皮层中GSK-3βmRNA的减少有关。此外，此表型与GSK-3β蛋白表达、激酶活性及β连环蛋白在PBMCs表达中的下游效应有关。最终发现，TT遗传型与衰减的MRI前额叶功能活性、降低的前额叶皮层厚度及精神分裂症诊断有关。
